A server exposes capabilities as tools, resources, and prompts: the model calls tools, the host application decides which resources enter the context, and the user picks prompts.

A local stdio server reads credentials from the environment. A local HTTP server binds to 127.0.0.1 and checks Origin. A multi-user server is configured as an OAuth 2.1 resource server and validates the token audience.

Messages are JSON-RPC over stdio or Streamable HTTP; actual support depends on the implementation. The 2026-07-28 revision drops the initialize handshake: each request carries its own protocol version and capabilities, so a server keeps no session between requests.
